What kind of manufacturer is Takeshi Saji?

Takeshi Saji is a traditional craftsman specializing in Echizen forged cutlery based in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, and is a blacksmith often referred to as a “legend in the world of kitchen knives.”

Born in Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, in 1948, he learned the basics at a blacksmithing training school after graduating from junior high school and then apprenticed under his father, Harukichi, the second-generation owner, at his family’s workshop. He succeeded his father as the third-generation head of the Saji Forged Cutlery workshop. Founded in 1916, it is a long-established blacksmith workshop with over 100 years of history.

In 1992, at the young age of 44, he was certified as a Traditional Craftsman. At the time, he was the youngest person ever to receive this certification in the field of Echizen forged cutlery.

Although he originally started as a hatchet smith, his decision to take on the challenge of creating custom knives—which were popular in Europe and the United States—proved to be a turning point.

His technical skill and unique artistic vision began to garner international attention. It is said that this venture into custom knives helped introduce the techniques of Echizen forged blades to the world.

The name “Takeshi Saji” has now transcended that of an individual and established itself as a brand in its own right.

He creates a wide range of items, from pocket knives to survival knives, hatchets, and kitchen knives, which are cherished by collectors and field workers worldwide.

By handcrafting everything from the blades to the handles and cases, he has built a unique artistic vision, establishing himself as such a prominent figure in Japanese-style knives that it is said there is hardly anyone who does not know him.

Why is Takeshi Saji chosen?

① Unparalleled Beauty — The Rainbow Patterns of Colored Damascus

The most iconic feature of Takeshi Saji’s work is his unique technique known as “colored Damascus.” The rainbow-colored patterns—created by adding color to the distinctive ripples that emerge from Damascus steel—captivate many fans with their unparalleled beauty.

By skillfully blending traditional two-sheet forging with Western-style knife design, his kitchen knives and utility knives, crafted with meticulous attention to aesthetics, are masterpieces that offer not only functionality but also the joy of ownership.

② Playful Designs — A Commitment to Original Handles

Saji’s kitchen knives and utility knives are also famous for their unconventional handles. For example, he has created an original design that encapsulates a pinecone within acrylic, revealing its cross-section as the handle.

Handles crafted from natural materials and traditional techniques—such as desert ironwood, deer antler, burl wood, and lacquer—give each knife its own personality and story.

This design sensibility is described as “simple yet innovative,” exuding a unique aesthetic that no one else can replicate.

③ The Durability Born of a Hatchet Smith — Robust Cutting Performance and Durability

Takeshi Saji was, originally, a hatchet smith. Consequently, the blades he forges are thick and sturdy, characterized by a solid, substantial feel.

These substantial, weighty blades cut deeply into ingredients, delivering a powerful cutting performance.

They are favored by those who seek not only delicacy but also the reliability of a tough, durable tool, and are beloved by outdoor professionals and field workers alike.

④ The Name Is the Brand — Recognized by Collectors Worldwide

The name Takeshi Saji is known among knife collectors and chefs around the world.

It is a rare case where the name “Takeshi Saji” itself has become established as a brand name.

He has exhibited at numerous domestic and international trade shows, and his craftsmanship and works are highly regarded overseas, with orders coming not only from Europe and the United States but also from various Asian countries.

He has been featured in television programs, magazines, and international media, and HAGAKURE has introduced him as “the master of the knife world who never stops moving forward.”
